Bringing the Crusades to Life: Painting a Bretonnian Army for Warhammer: The Old World

Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of painting a stunning Bretonnian army commissioned for Warhammer: The Old World. It was a journey through history and fantasy that brought immense creative satisfaction, a few technical challenges, and, ultimately, a result I’m proud to showcase.

The Challenge of White: Subtlety in Simplicity

Working with a predominantly white color scheme was both an exciting and demanding task. White is an unforgiving color—every brushstroke and blend must be flawless to achieve that clean, luminous look. Add in the need for subtle shading and highlights to create depth, and you’ve got yourself a test of both patience and precision.

To counteract the flatness that can sometimes plague white surfaces, I used a mix of ivory tones, soft beige and brown shadows, and sharp white highlights to give the fabric a crisp, vibrant appearance. The intended result was layers that reflect light naturally and evoke the sun-drenched landscapes of Jerusalem.

Freehand Galore: A Painter’s Paradise

What made this project even more exhilarating was the extensive freehand work. From shields to tabards, almost every miniature in the army features a Templar cross, some models have as many as 8!

Highlights of the Army

Some standout models in the army include:

  • The Knights: Decked in pristine white tabards and vibrant crusader heraldry, these models came alive with layered shading and delicate edge highlights.

  • The Baron on Royal Pegasus: A centerpiece adorned with relics and iconography, demanding precision in every stroke to convey its sacred importance.

  • Peasant archers: Even the humble peasants received love, with muted tones and subtle details to contrast with the knights’ grandeur.
